Irises

Going through my stash of photos looking for a subject to paint,
I came across some that I took last year of the blue irises from the garden.
They are so pretty and evocative of spring and warmer weather,
that I was inspired to paint them.

Mt. Shuksan

In Sept. 2012, I camped in the North Cascades NP
in Washington State, of which I took many photos.
This was painted from a picture I took of Mt. Shuksan.
For late Sept. I was amazed at how much snow there was,
not only on this mountain, but at many places in the higher elevations.
There was piles of it at Painters Point,
where I was headed when I drove by this mountain and circled a pretty little lake.
The view you see here is from the far side of the lake.
You can see the road because I removed a lot of the greenery surrounding the lake.
This is one of my most favorite places to visit.

Many Shades of Gray

Painted for DPW's values challenge
using only shades from black to white.
I had been wanting to paint this polar bear
and decided this challenge was a good excuse to do so.

Striking Spring Gold

In the PNW we have had unusually very mild winter weather
which has caused many trees to begin blooming
and early spring flowers to poke their heads out to check the season.
A few golden daffodils along with some primroses and a yellow ground cover
have bloomed a month or so early.
I couldn't resist painting these little beauties.

English Cottage and Tree with Purple Blossoms

A quaint old English cottage with a thatched roof
 and sweet scented climbing roses.
A tree with purple blossoms, and little creek edged with stones
make for a lovely country garden.

Swan's in Monet's Pond

Painted for DPW's Valentine challenge.
These swans are swimming in a pond of a garden.
She has found her mate,
the sequel to my French Country Cottage painting.

French Country Cottage

The inspiration for this painting
came from a cottage in Monet's garden.
I simplified the structure but kept the little stone wall
and creek in the foreground; as well as the early fall colors.
Kept the painting process simple also ...
laying down the paint and leaving it (most of the time)
in homage to Monet's impressionistic style.

Walking in Paradise

This painting is in homage to Jan van der Linden,
architect, artist, and my maternal grandfather.
When I was a little girl, I remember a painting similar to this,
done by my grandfather of an island woman in a red dress
with a basket on her head.
She was walking to or from the local market.
I don't remember many other details, though.
He had painted several works
from the time he spent on the island of Java
when my mother was a small child.

Coastal Pine

Another tree painting for DPW "Tree" challenge.
Along the wild and beautiful Oregon coast,
quite often a lone tree will be tenaciously hanging onto a rocky outcrop.
It's branches sculpted by the wind,
and the trunk bent by the strong gusts
that come from the ocean storms.

Purple Twilight

Another work painted for DPW "Tree" challenge.
I was drawn to the large 'sentinel' tree
which seemed to be guarding the river.
The many shades of purple added a special ambience to the scene.

Lone Pine

Painted for DPW "Tree" challenge,
from a photo provided by Laurel Daniel.
I cropped it and chose the landscape shape.
Kept the fence and enhanced the clouds a bit.
 A fun painting to do.

Girl With the Violet Eyes

In doing portrait painting,
I like to incorporate color into the skin, hair and eyes
that takes the portrait out of the realism genre.
In this example, the young woman's eyes are a deep shade of violet,
which I repeated in the background, hair and shadows on the skin.

White Barn With Red Tractor

Third in a series of farm paintings.
The white barn merely showcases the old red Farmall tractor.
First time for painting a tractor,
so I tried to keep it simple yet say what it is.

Red Barn

Although this old red barn's bright red paint
was peeling and showing weathered boards from underneath,
it had a shabby chic quality that I liked.
All the windows were intact.
Her faded orange door was held on by iron hinges,
but a small wooden bar kept it closed.

Farm Building

On a road trip traveling through SE Washington State,
I took many pictures of the farm land
and interesting buildings, of which this is one.
Possibly a grain storage silo type barn with store.
I particularly liked the patchwork look,
which when painted gave a slightly abstract look.
