Peony, Plums and Pitcher

This was painted for Jen Smith's Rookie Painter's November still life challenge.
Oddly enough, one my favorite parts of this picture
is the 'Boos Blocks' inscription on the cutting board.

Pomegranate Wine

Every fall my grandmother would make pomegranate wine,
to serve the next year during the holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas.
She would bring it out and place the decanter on the mantle when company arrived.
It was slightly tart, yet spicey sweet, served chilled.

Mona Lisa Restaurant

Painted for DPW's Crowd Challenge from a photo Carol Marine took in Germany.
In painting this challenge, I added more color to the clothing,
removed the cigarettes from the hands of the many smokers,
and thinned the crowd a little.
I also left off the lovely windows and flower boxes
that ran across the top of the restaurant.
I felt they competed too much with the subject - the people.

Twisted Chestnut Tree

In the front pasture there is an old chestnut tree,
whose gray trunk and branches twist and turn,
as they spread out.
When the leaves turn and begin to fall,
the wonderful bones of this old tree are revealed.

Persimmons Three

I have actually never eaten a persimmon,
but their deep rich red and orange colors,
make them a wonderful fall subject to paint.

The Pumpkin Patch

These little boys, my grandson's, have found the perfect pumpkins
to carve into jack o' lanterns for Halloween.

Honey Crisp

Painted for Carol Marine's DPW's Ten Minute challenge.
I slopped on the background colors,
painted the apples cad. red,
added the yellow green,
then flew over it with white highlights.
Lastly I painted in the stems and leaves,
and with literally 40 seconds to spare
I added bits of color here and there.

This challenge is all about loose brush work.
I'm not sure I achieved that objective.
Even with the time limit, I think I over worked it.

Window Shopping

Another painting I've revisited, because I wasn't satisfied with it.
Originally painted for Bill Guffey's September Virtual Paintout in New Orleans.
I found these two young people timidly looking
into what looked like a Voodoo or Santeria store in the French Quarter.

I added detail to the store front; a plant and a dog on leash.
Strengthened some of the colors, as well as highlights and shadows.
The little dog seems to see a better destination...
