White Rose Edged in Pink

Another rose painted for DPW's "Another Rose" challenge.
I've always found this kind of rose very pretty and interesting,
but a challenge to paint.
Just to switch things up a bit, I used a brush
but mostly a palette knife to achieve the impasto look in the rose,
and the scraped look in the background.

Faded Old Glory

Painted for DPW Old Glory challenge.
When traveling around the US I often saw flags painted on barns.
Some were fresh and new and others as faded
as the old barns they were painted on.
I have long wanted to paint one, and this challenge gave me the opportunity.
I chose the fading flag and old barn
because it reminds me of the long standing patriotism of the country.

Calla Lilies

Thought I'd try something a little different
- it's fun to experiment with painting styles.
This work was done from a picture I took this summer while traveling.
The calla lilies were so tall I couldn't see inside their trumpet shaped flowers.
Thy were nestled in a garden of other smaller blooms of blues and orange.

Pansies

Used the Pansies that I purchased
to paint one of the cards I send my Mom.
I have these blank watercolor cards
that I occasionally paint florals, birds etc. on,
to help brighten her day.
Actually it was her suggestion
a few years ago, that I paint her cards
and send them to her.
I have been doing so ever since.

To Crown the Year

Recently, I was driving through the countryside
where I live and saw this scene.
I knew that I would have to paint.
It had so many elements that are quintessentially fall in the PNW.
When the rains return, the skies are cloudy and gray;
the cover grasses of farmland fields show a surprising springish green color;
and of course the autumn trees putting on their full show.
When I finished the painting, I thought the line of trees
banding the farmer's field looked like natures jewelry .
I then, remembered a line from the psalms
that I had always wanted to use for a title
"To Crown the Year!"
A simple painting that I feel reveals a beautiful truth about this season -
it truly is the crown of the year.

Autumn Country Road

Autumn is such a beautiful time of year,
that it can lend a cheerful and glorious ambience
to this once vibrant and productive farm,
now overgrown and returning to it's natural state.
I wonder how many families have lived in
and enjoyed life in this old abandoned country farm house.
Maybe a new family will take up the challenge
and bring life back to the rooms and land.

Blue Rain

Painted for DPW "Party Dress" challenge.
I originally began this painting in acrylics a couple years ago.
Never finished it until now - repainted it in oils.
I wanted to style this painting after John Singer Sargent's paintings of women,
but a little more modern, by giving her a Vera Wang evening gown,
and long hair worn down on her shoulders.
My nod to Sargent's era is the long lace scarf.

Trusty Rusty

Painted for Daily Paintworks 'shadow' challenge.
When I first saw this rusty old VW bug,
I was drawn to the shadow it cast in the bright sunlight.
But I also loved the rusty old character of it.
In spite of it's age, its owner probably cherishes it.

Lemon Blossoms

Inspiration for this painting
was the words to an old folk song by Harry Belafonte,
that got stuck in my head:
"Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet,
but the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat."
I had hoped that by painting this, I could exorcise the little demon.
Not Harry, loved his songs.  We'll see.

White Poppies

I revisited my 'White Poppies" painting
and touched up the background
and deepened the petal shadows.
Hit a few highlights here and there.
I think it works better now.
 These white poppies were growing
along the road in a little coastal town.
I was attracted by the movement of the petals
dancing in the breeze, but loved the way
the lovely white flowers revealed blues and purples
in the shadow areas.

Vine Maple

This was painted en plein air,
in a campground where I stayed this summer,
I added a few finishing touches in my studio.
This sunlit path led to my campsite
and was lined with Vine Maple
just beginning to turn into it's spectacular fall colors.
It is glorious to see and a welcome break
from all the greens one sees in the forest.

Fireweed

Fireweed is one of my favorite wildflowers
(also I love the honey made from these flowers).
I painted this from a photo I took this summer of fireweed,
growing in a mountain meadow.
I decided to paint it more abstractly
to emphasize the rich pale violet color of these pretty flowers.

Boulders and White Water

Painted this while camping on the Breitenbush River.
It is a beautiful river that runs
through a narrow canyon in central Oregon.
One of the most spectacular scenic drives in Oregon
 follows this river.
There are many great campgrounds along the drive'
and dispersal camping is allowed.
It is a place I will surely go back to.

Mysterious

Painted this en plein air at a lake where I camped late this summer.
Added a few finishing touches in the studio.
The trees were already showing some fall colors.
Across the lake, they seemed to float in and out of the mist
arising from the water in the early morning.
The sky was cloudy and overcast
which gave the whole scene a somewhat ethereal look.

Cows and the Red Barn

Painted this scene for DPW "Cows" challenge.
These lovely black cows, mom and baby,
are actually two from a small herd
here on the farm where I live.
I painted the barn outside plein air,
and  have the fir needles in my pochade box
 and paints to prove it,
from the tree I was standing near.

Sunflower Gold

It seems that everywhere I traveled on this years road trip,
I  saw sunflowers growing in gardens,
along side buildings, in fields, farms and cities.
So one day I was looking around, trying to decide what to paint
while lounging around the campsite,
 when sunflowers came to mind.
Sunny, bright and golden -  a perky break from all the lush greens.

Citrus Slice With Seed

Photographer and artist, Carolyn Anctil
graciously gave me permission to paint my interpretation
of her spectacular photo entitled "Citrus".
I initially was intrigued by the wonderful way
the light shone through the fruit slice.
But soon I realized I couldn't do the 'light' justice in paints,
but as I studied it more, I decided to paint my work more abstracted,
emphasizing the many "dots" of color I perceived
from the rind to the blueish shadow spots.
You can see her photo on her blog, by clicking on her name above.

Wildflowers 2

A second entry for DPW Wildflowers challenge.
I painted this one from one of my own photos

I was taken by the rickety old fence around the pasture.

Blue Moon Effects

Recently we experienced the Blue Moon
with all the folk lore and fantasy that surrounds it.
This painting is a surreal depiction of the Blue Moon,
where I incorporated the red clouds
caused by the effects of the fires burning in the forests nearby,
and the way the bright moonlight lit up the tree tops.
All part real, part imagination, part fantasy
to make up a painting that is unique
 to the Blue Moon's appearing.

Confetti

The deck in the side garden
is enveloped with a profusion of colorful flowers.
As I approached it one day,
it made me think of so many impressionist paintings,
where the colors are scattered in bits of bright hues of paint
across the canvas like garden confetti.
I knew I wanted to paint it
and the name would be
 "Confetti".

Cle Elum River

While on my road trip,
I camped in the Red Mountain Campground on the Cle Elum River,
in the Wanatche Nat. Forest in WA.
This was the actual scene from my campsite.
This painting was done early one morning while the sun was just coming up.
The clouds moved in and filtered the light, so it was mostly flat.
I had to paint the light and dark values quickly, when I could.
But the weather had been so hot, that no one was complaining
 - except maybe the resident artist.

High Desert Canyon

Painted for this week's DPW "Summer" challenge.
For me, summer means a road trip where I paint and take photos.
This year's trip included the high desert of SE Oregon.
I take along a couple books to study, by artists I wish to learn from.
I painted this beautiful scene from the influence of Johannes Vloothius.
This amazing high desert landscape of soft colors
reflecting the canyon's stark beauty,
beginning with the pale grays of the overcast skies,
to the muted purples of the distant hills,
 the sandstone canyon walls,
to the vegetation growing along the seasonal creek.

6" x 8" oil on canvas panel

Available on DPW auction
