Pinnacles at Sunrise

Early morning, a favorite time of mine to paint,
offered this spectacular sight of the Pinnacles in W. Wyoming.
The sky was a pale yellow,
with lavender shadows on the pinnacles
where the morning light had not yet reached.

Pend Oreille Falls

I painted this while on the part of my summer road trip

which took me through beautiful NE Washington state

near the Canadian border.

It is mostly a plein air painting,

with a few additional touches done in the studio.

Irises with Shell

I've been busy all through June and haven't had the time
to complete a new painting.
I had intended to paint these Irises in oil
after painting them in watercolors (see below)..
So this is it.
I added extra bright colors as background
for the delicate whites and blues of the irises.

Irises, Shell and Blue Bowl

Painted from a combination of two challenge photos,
one of irises in a garden,
and the other of an assortment of shells with a blue jar.
Challenge was to place any combination together in a painting.
I chose to make a floral still life,
changing the jar to a bowl, using one shell
and placing the irises behind the bowl.
I also experimented with mixed media of watercolors and acrylics.

Red Climbing Roses

When I saw these gorgeous red roses
climbing up this wonderful old crumbling and patched rock wall
- well it was a painting waiting to happen.

Under the Sea

Painted for daily paint works underwater challenge.
I tried to capture the beauty and wonder of the seascape
beneath the seas surface -
bright coral, intense plant colors and iridescent fish,
all captured in the muted light coming from the seas surface.

Garden Shed

Painted for DPW's Garden Challenge.
I painted an old garden shed, and composed this painting
from the various flowers that grow on the property:
pink rhodies, a bed of blue irises, yellow azaleas, magenta clematis.
Besides the garden implements,
I added birds
and one little lady bug (can you find her) for interest.

Cattle Drive

Painted from some photos I took on a road trip
through south eastern Oregon, where there are many ranches.
I had to wait on the road because of the cattle drive
- cows go where they want.
It was interesting to watch these cowboys moving the cattle along.
So I took a few pictures and enjoyed the experience.

Mimi

This painting was done from 'Paint and Draw Together' challenge
using a photo of the blog owner, Lela Stankovic's sister.
The photo was taken in bright sunlight,
so I toned down the harshness of the shadows
without eliminating them completely,
to soften and better reveal her features.

Fresh From the Garden

Painted for DPW's Veggie Challenge.
These are a few of my picks from the local farmers market:
turnips, grape tomatoes, ruby red Swiss chard.
For my painting setup I accented them
with my bottle of Balsamic Vinegar for extra interest.
This was a fun challenge and  besides,
every kitchen needs a painting.

Ram

Painted for DPW's "Sheep-ish" challenge
from a photo Carol Marine provided.
I like the way the sheep's face seems to be floating
out of his abundant wool.
A neighboring ranch has some sheep
and I have seen them before shearing
where they seem to be huge balls of fluff on feet.

Bird on a Twig

It's late summer, the leaves are turning
and the Queen Anne's Lace dots the field of yellow grasses;
and this bird seems to be contemplating his journey south
as he perches atop a twig.

Flower Fields

While traveling last summer,
I came across an old lavender field,
that was mostly overgrown
and dotted with other volunteer flowers.
A young mom and her daughter
were picking bouquets.
While their dog busied himself
chasing enticing scents.
Some photos I took
were the inspiration for this work.

Giverney Spring

Another painting of Monet's garden in Giverney, France.
It is said Monet painted 100's of paintings
of his gorgeous gardens, in all seasons.
I particularly like this view, with the Asian foot bridge
canopied with blue Wisteria, over his lily pond.
Wonderful weeping willows, lush plants
and a rainbow of flowers frame it.

Morning Clouds

Painted from a photo I took last summer
in the early dawn, while camping lakeside.
I loved the pastel colors of the morning clouds
against the cerulean blue sky.

The Little Woods

There is a 'little woods' near where I live,
that I like to paint en plein air.
When I drive by I sometimes take a photo
for future painting reference.
This was painted from one of those photos.
I liked the gold of the grases,
against the silver of the rain laden clouds.
