Fischers Mill

The Old Mill is a painting from a photo I submitted for the DPW challenge.

This is one of my attempts to paint the old mill. I was never truly happy with any of them. But felt I could live with this version. After seeing all the wonderful interpretations submitted, I began to feel like a coward for not submitting one of my own. So this is it, such as it is.

Pampas Grass

This is my entry for Bill Guffy's Virtual Paintout New Zealand challenge. As I cruised the roads of this lush and green country, I noticed that almost everywhere I went, there were stands of these tall feathery plants growing along country roads. (Don't know what New Zealanders call these plants, but I know them as Pampas Grass).  So I decided to paint them as my contribution to the  challenge. They are an off white that takes on a pinkish hue in certain light.

A Few Of Her Fav's

My granddaughter's 17th birthday is coming up in July, and I wanted to paint for her. In casual conversation, here and there, I found out what some of her favorite things are and incorporated them into this painting; shoes: green Converse, colors: green mostly, then purple, three most favorite books (she reads a lot): A Long Way Gone, The catcher in the Rye, Midsummer Night's Dream, and other misc things like frog stuff. She's an honor student, therefore the other books and pencils.

The Purr-fect View

Painted for Rookie Painter's June challenge. The original photo was a hotel window looking out onto a brick wall and more windows. Lot's of angles, perspective, and vanishing points to consider. But I can rarely leave anything as is, so I enhanced the scene with a few amenities, added for interest.

Upsy-daisy Watermelon

Painted for the DWP Upside-down challenge, where Carol Marine offered an upside-down photo and asked participants to paint it that way. The set-up was watermelon slices and a silver bowl on a blue glass surface. Lots of reflections. (The first version is the painting flipped right-side-up, the second version is the painting just as it was painted.)

Grandmother's Bowls and Platter

Painted for DPW "balance" challenge. This entry is based more on color balance than 'stacking' although that is a part of the composition.

Wild Plums and Red Grapes

The plums grow on some old trees planted by early settlers and long since abandoned. They are called Americanus something-or-other .......locals just call them 'wild plums'. The grapes came from the grocery store. The bright blue in the background is really more muted - like a medium teal, I guess my photo program needs the blue adjusted.

Inuksuk

This is my entry into DPW "Balance" challenge - painted from the photo I took at the north rim of the Grand Canyon, which I spoke of below, with an explanation of an "Inuksuk".

Balanced Stones

When camping at the Grand Canyon, I found this little 'sculture' there. I had once learned that the native peoples of Alaska would build these stone structures, sometimes very large, which they called "Inuksuk". Their purpose was to direct travelers, or warn them of danger, or to mark a cache of supplies for a lost or stranded person. Some had religious meanings. In directing a VBS once, the theme had been set in Alaska, and we had the children make stone Inuksuk to represent how God, His Word, and the Church directed our lives, warning us of danger, showing the way, pointing something out; teaching that we are 'living stones' etc. This all came back to me when I saw the DPW challenge for this week, which is 'balancing', and we are asked to paint things stacked one upon the other.

Probably not likely, but I did wonder if some native person or one of our VBS kids had made the one I found in my campsite. I think I will paint an Inuksuk for the challenge.

The Cottage Garden

Barb Benik's  Studio Atelier challenge this month is Irises. Rather than the dark leafy folliage which is in the photos, I placed my irises in a summer cottage garden.
