Lake House Nocturne

" This was painted for a DPW challenge - 'A view from a cabin window'.
on a lake with a dock and boat.
There are wolves in the area, and their song is often heard at night.
The light in the forest is often 'green'
and it was this special glow that I wanted to achieve."

Season's Greetings

Used the Zorn palette of  Cad. red,
yellow ochre, ivory black and titanium white,
to paint this winter scene.
I live in a rural area
and saw this lady getting or sending her mail
and knew I wanted to paint her
and her iron mailbox.

Early Snow

A snow storm high in the mountains, leaves the yellow grasses
of the meadow with patches of early snow,
and a light sheen of ice on the lake.
Winter is coming.

Persimmon Tree Ranch

A fall sunrise as seen through the limbs
of a venerable old Persimmon tree,
after which the ranch it overlooks, was named.
The tree was planted not long after the ranch was settled,
and still produces fruit.

Christmas Snow

There is magic in a Christmas snowfall.
Children sense it and can play outside seemingly oblivious to the cold.
They sled and build snowmen, and run and throw snowballs.
There is a whimsical feel to this Christmas village
that places this scene within the realm of childhood imagination.
Happy Holidays!

Fall in an Evergreen Forest

The riotous reds and oranges of Vine Maple
add an explosion of color to fall in an evergreen forest,
where the trees are all green except for some Big Leaf Maples
which turn a golden yellow.
I began this painting as an 'en plein air' work in acrylics
when I was camping this fall.
I added the details to it in my studio with oils.

Feeding the Kids

This hen lives near us. She runs freely about the property,
and shows her little chicks the best places to forage
for bugs and seeds. She knows the briers
are also a safe place against predators.

Wild Blues

These lush blue/purple hydrangeas grow near the kitchen garden.
This scene reveals the ragged rain clouds scudding across the fall sky
which was of similar colors to the flowers.
So the perspective I chose to paint this landscape makes the hydrangeas
appear to be melting into the cloudy horizon.

Dahlias

These two lovely peachy pink Dahlias were the last in the summer garden.
Picked before the first frost could take them and placed in a vase.
Their bright color brings a little of summer's sunny ambiance into the house.

I found these at my local grocery store and couldn't resist
buying a couple of stems.
Then I needed to paint them.

Bellissimo Fiore Strada

I painted this lovely narrow old stone street
and stone and stucco buildings bedecked with flowers,
from a photo taken by my sister
when she vacationed in Spello, Italy.
The title 'bellissimo fiore strada'
means 'beautiful flower street'.

Morning Song

Sometimes, when the sun is just beginning to ascend,
it begins as a reddish orb that gradually becomes a butter yellow.
The sky reflects the golden glow, setting tree tops alight,
and clouds and mist revealing various shades of purples.
You can almost hear the earth singing to the new day.

Valley of the Blue Moon

Usually the term "once in a blue moon"
indicates something rarely happening, unusual or extraordinary.
In traveling, every once in a while, I'll see something so lovely,
with such a beautiful ambiance, that even a photo cannot capture
what the eye and mind perceive.
This valley with the spectacular moon is one of those places.

Turning Leaves

I  kept this painting simple, so that it best depicts the beauty of nature in the turning colors of leaves. It doesn't revel so much in flashy shades of golds and reds, but in the subtle shades of rust and ochre more symbolic of the season.

Canadian Thistle - and Bee

The Canadian Thistle was originally painted in acrylic
on a fine French linen paper a few years ago. I added the bee
(which had been in the photo I took and used as reference)
and entered the revised painting  in the "Bee" challenge
on Daily paint Works.
I overlaid much of the original acrylic painting
and added the bee in oils.

Ranch on Last Dollar Road

This scene was painted from Lee Brown's photo

near Telluride, CO.
I have traveled through this stunning country
and knew I wanted to paint it.

Autumn Moon

Painted for DPW Fall color challenge.
This one more traditional than the 'blues' of fall
of my first entry (see Blue Geraniums).
I combined a photo of the large harvest moon
and the back forty where the trees are a riot of fall colors.
Snuck in the local pumpkin patch in the foreground,
and 'Voila!' a quick fall study.

Wolves in Winter

I painted this last year from a photo taken in British Columbia.
I always felt the scene needed something,
so I decided to add the gray wolves.
I love wolves and am happy that they have been
reintroduced to the US wilderness.
I haven't seen any since I was a child,
They are very shy and reclusive, but on
recent camping trips to Wyoming and Colorado
I have heard their wolfsong in the night.
It is so amazing and beautiful to listen to.

Sea Glass Float on the Beach

On the Oregon coast, glass floats are frequently seen on the shore
along with shells, driftwood and other treasures of the sea left on the beach.
The local artist glass blowers will often leave their beautiful versions of these glass orbs on the sand for some lucky beachcombers to find.

Camping

Painted this - en plein air - from the perspective of my campsite.
I liked the little teardrop camping trailer,
but I was particularly drawn to the little campfires
scattered throughout the campground in evening.
Although you can't see the people,
each fire belonged to a family or couple
enjoying the warmth and light.
The smell of wood smoke and outdoor cooking
mingled with the forest scents.
(note: the sky is darker in the painting,
and the scene looks a bit more like night
than the photograph depicts.)

Forest Sunset

Plein Air painting of a brilliant sunset in the Mt. Hood
National Forest where I camped this summer.
There was a wildfire some distance from the campground,
and the wind blew the smoke for miles.
The smokey air caused the sunset to cast a golden glow
through the trees.
This glow had the strange effect of  hiding
many of the trees in this dense forest.

to enrich and compliment each other.
For sure I am going to try this again.

Hollyhocks

Last summer when I was in Anacortes, WA.
Hollyhocks grew in every garden, in the planters of many businesses,
and even in some alley ways.
I took several photos with the intention of someday painting them.
As I watched another artist friend painting his Hollyhocks,
I remembered my own photos and was inspired to give it a try.
I decided on a more contemporary style.
