Snow at the Seacoast

 

Occasionally it snows on the Oregon beaches.

A white blanket covers the coast,

where the mountains and fir trees meet the sandy beaches,

and sea grass pokes up through the snow.

Such a lovely sight...

Seabirds

 

 

​A few more of the many seabirds

 that find sanctuary along the Olympic NP coastline in WA.

 They nest and feed here in spring and summer

 which is a great time for viewing.

Low Tide at Sunset

 

 

 

 

​Another Oregon seascape painting. 

Along the rocky coastline, there are places

where the low tides leave pools of water among the rocks.

 Because of the often misty conditions and low lying fog,

 the sunsets are spectacular.

Coastal Pine

 

Another tree painting for DPW "Tree" challenge.

Along the wild and beautiful Oregon coast,

quite often a lone tree will be tenaciously hanging onto a rocky outcrop.

 It's branches sculpted by the wind,

and the trunk bent by the strong gusts

 that come from the ocean storms.

Black Sand Cove

 

 

​Along the wild and scenic Oregon coast,

there are little hidden places that make the coastline so special.

Here I have painted a beautiful little cove

ringed with high golden bluffs.

The sea has a silvery look from the black sand,

which I believe comes from volcanic pumice.

Wild and Rocky

 

 

​Where the Oregon coastal mountain range meets the ocean,

the shoreline is wild, rocky, and extremely beautiful.

The occasional beach appears offering lovely sandy stretches.

The weather is often cloudy with gray skies and gusty winds

blowing the surf up and over the rocky headlands.

Creating misty layers that diminish into the clouds.

Windblown

 

 

The Oregon coast

 is the most wonderful place to be a 'storm watcher".

The strong winds race through the trees

and fling the foamy ocean caps into the air.

Colors of the Sea

 

The sea is not just blue or green or gray

but quite often many different colors.

Depending on shadows and light,

sand and seaweed,

sky, clouds and sunlight.

Fof Rolling In

 

 

This sailboat is at anchor

against the fog rolling into the harbor

 as the afternoon fades. 

The pastel colors evoke the cold

and mysterious light of a foggy evening

MIsty Coast

 

 

​The great diversity of landscape along the Oregon coast

makes it a wonderful place to photograph and paint.

Here along the central coast, is a mosaic of beach grasses

 and shallow tide pools, nestled among the sand dunes.

A creek finds its way into the waters of the vast Pacific ocean.

 Low hanging clouds give a misty, watercolor effect to the horizon.

Sunset Feast

 

 

The setting sun reflects

 its orange and golden colors

 in the wet sand and shallow waves

 that lap the shore,

 as a white heron finds an evening feast.

Storm Moving In

 

 

Painted for DPW's Stormy" weather challenge.

I love painting dramatic skies.

This challenge photo has it all: rain, wind, blowing clouds,

 even a smattering of sunlight reflected in the water and on the clouds.

I later added the lighthouse because I felt the little island

was telling me it wanted one.

Sailing the Strait

 

 

Another ​plein air painting from my summer roadtrip,

 this time on the Olympic Penn.

 I was enchanted by the lovely purples and blues of this scene,

and the placid waters of the Juan de Fuca Strait,

where a  sailboat and its reflection 

silently moved into the mists off Vancouver Island, Canada.

Below is a photo of the scene painted. My computer tends to

over do the blues so the purples and bluegreens aren't as obvious

in the photo.

 

 

 

Shore Birds at Monhegan, Island

Painted this seascape from a challenge photo on DPW.
This is Black Head promotory at Monhegan Island, Maine.
I added the shore birds for extra interest.

Fishing Boats on the Beach

When Van Gogh lived in Arles, he took a trip to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer

on the Mediterranean Sea, where he made several paintings
of the seascape and town.

I painted this from a photo of one of these

San Juans Sunset

The sunsets can be amazing here in the San Juan Islands.
The coastal fog appears as a purple layer
over the bright reds and golds of the setting sun.

Along the coast - especially during the winter,
sudden storms come up, with winds, waves and clouds.
Then, just as suddenly they can disappear.
